Back Up Before Falling: Safety Measures for Utah Garage Doors

The average garage door weighs at an average of 400 pounds, or a little more than the weight of a barbell. It does not take rocket science to know what will happen if the door suddenly decides to pin an unsuspecting victim. An estimated 20,000 people every year in the United States are injured or killed by closing garage doors, says the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC). Most of the victims of such incidents are children.

In light of such incidents, the CPSC issued a public advisory about the hazard of garage doors that do not back up automatically. Residents have to replace such garage doors with newer models that have automatic reversing systems. Introduced in 1993, the requirement for such an automatic system was made mandatory for all present and future garage doors. The system can be any sensor that detects motion along the path of the closing garage door.

The CPSC also advises the public to test their garage doors before being operated fully. Place a piece of wood or any object under the garage door; the sensor should detect its presence and force the door to back up. If the result does not occur as expected, it may be due to a problem with the installation of the sensor or the garage door mechanism. Until the problem is resolved, the garage door must not be used.

It is also recommended that garage doors have to undergo a routine maintenance check by a Utah garage door repair contractor.  The garage door mechanism may also pose a threat of suddenly falling, especially if the door itself does not stay firm even when partially opened. Even with the sensors working, the door can still be dangerous if the mechanism itself is not stable. Since the garage door mechanism is very sophisticated, a repairman should take a look at it.

Modern Utah garage door systems can also be operated manually, which is useful during a blackout. A garage door mechanism comes with a quick release control that detaches the door from the opener system. The quick release can also be used when doing maintenance work on the door. Residents can open or close the garage door manually in order to determine whether the parts are working as intended or not.

Safety does not only include maintenance and repair measures, but also preventive ones. For example, the remote control for the Utah garage door must be kept at a height where children cannot reach it. It is also the parents' duty to inform their children of the dangers of garage doors so that such accidents can be averted and more lives can be saved.
